Locations

Below are some photos of the areas in the Castle Grounds where we decided to film our opening scene. This is so you are able to get an insight to the location instead of just watching the opening scene.

We felt that this area of the Castle Grounds was a good location due to the flowers. The colours on the flowers were bright and colourful which could show that this opening scene is a romantic comedy. Also, flowers are stereotypically girly therefore it could represent that the two males in the opening scene are quite feminine.

The next photos shows the bench that the two males sat on during the opening scene. We decided on this area because it look romantic and calm. This represents that they are not at peace even after events which would be seen during the film.

The next photo is a photo of the short clip that was filmed when the one character claimed that he 'did not like geese". This location was private which we thought has a nice touch to the opening scene because it showed that the couple was on their own 'journey'.

The next photos showed the end shot of the couple when they are in the Castle Grounds. We chose this area because we felt that it had a romantic feel with the way the area was framed. It showed the audience that love was present between the two characters.

Below is a video of part of the Castle Grounds which we decided to film in.

Production Diary

Due to personal problems with my actors, they were unable to make the dates that we needed them to in order to stick to the production Schedule. We managed to get the scenes we needed within a short amount of time after the deadline.

Date
Actions
4th – 8th January
During this week, as a group, we allocated the roles within our group. This meant that we had to decide our strengths and weaknesses so we could give out roles. It was agreed that I would be the editor. Also during this week, we discussed within the group who we could get to act within the film. This meant we had to look at what they would do during filming and we also had to ask people what they would be comfortable with. Towards the end of the week, we found our four main characters that were comfortable and willing to be in the film.
The main challenge that we faced was as a group, we found it difficult to find actors that were willing to play a homosexual character. This was due to the actor not feeling comfortable. As a group, we decided to extend our search by asking our definite characters if they knew anyone that would be able to act within the film and be comfortable. This is how we resolved the problem.
11th – 15th January
During this week, we focused on our locations. Although we decided where we were going to film, we needed specific areas within these locations. We decided that the best way to figure out the best locations would be to visit the locations. Therefore this is what we did. We went to the sixth forms canteen and decided that the back table would be the best area to film because it was out the way from the busiest parts of the canteen. This meant we would not have had a much background noise. We also visited the castle grounds in order to find the best locations. We walked around the areas and decided that different areas would be good to film but in different ways.
One challenge we faced when picking the areas was that we had to try and picture what area would be best for our opening scene. We had to carefully think about which parts of the canteen and what parts of the castle grounds would look best. We decided to go with most areas we chose due to being under a short time frame and also we decided that the areas were good because they were realistic.
18th – 22nd

January
During this week, as a group we decided the costumes and props that were going to be used. This meant going through our main characters and deciding who was going to wear what costume. We decided that for the canteen scene, they were all going to wear suits. This is because the other students that were in the background were also wearing suits therefore it would have looked odd if the characters were wearing different clothes. Also, we decided that our main character, Matt, was not going to wear a tie. This is because it showed that Matt was different to the others since they were wearing a tie and he wasn’t. It was representation for the fact he is gay. For the Castle grounds scene we decided to have the characters dressed in everyday clothes which included a scarf. We decided to use a scarf because it was used to show that the weather is icy cold which could represent that the opening scene was set in winter.
A challenge that we faced was that it was difficult to ensure that all the actors had the correct outfits when we began filming. This is because if the costume wasn’t correct then this could have affected our opening scene and its representations

During this week, we also created our studio logo on After Effects. We decided touse After Effects because this software has different effects which allowed us to make a good studio logo.
The challenge we faced with this was that no one on the group knew how to use the software therefore we were all learning. In order to overcome this problem, we decided to create different studio logos in order to learn how to use the software before making our own studio logo. It meant that the trial gave us the correct knowledge on how to use the software.
25th – 29th
January
During this week, we filmed the canteen scene. We had 4 actors participating in this scene. This included our main actor (Matthew), friend #1 (Tom) and friend #2 (Chris) and we also had a background actor. We gave the actors the script before we began filming so they were aware of the lines that they had and the order in which they had to speak. Once the actors felt comfortable with what they had to act, we were able to begin filming. We decided to film several different angles of the same scene. This meant that once we started editing, we were able to see the best angles for each part of dialogue.
During the filming, we had to overcome and deal with challenges. One of the challenges that we had to face was the background noise. This was due to the other pupils going on their break. Since we were filming in the canteen, this was a popular place for the pupils when on their break. This meant that when we were filming, the background noise became a issue because we were unable to hear the actors speak. In order to overcome this problem, we filmed the scene in between breaks. This gave us enough time to film the angles we needed to. Another problem that we faced was the lighting. Due to the canteen having natural light from the windows. This meant that the lighting kept changing due to the natural weather conditions. This became a problem because it caused some of the clips to look different to others that we filmed.
We also filmed the establishing shot and the only challenge that we found with this was high school students walking in front of the camera which meant we were not able to get the best shot. To resolve this, we filmed for a longer period of time so that when it came down to editing, we were able to see what parts we could use.
1st – 5th February
During this week, we filmed at the Castle Grounds. This would have been done the week before but unfortunately the weather prevented us from filming. By being able to finish all the filming, this meant that we were able to begin editing. By being able to start editing this meant that we were able to ensure that our opening scene was created quickly due to already working past our deadline. Since we already knew how to use the Premier, this meant we didn’t have to learn anything knew which made the editing process begin quickly.
The only challenge that we faced during this was to when we were filmed. As we were half way through filming, the weather looks and felt as if it was going to rain quite heavily. This meant we had to film quickly in order to avoid the weather. This is how we resolved the issue.
8th – 12th February
During this film we continued to edit our film. This meant ensuring that the opening scene was in the correct order. We did this by watching the opening scene continuously to ensure that it made sense. We also got someone that was unfamiliar with our opening scene to watch it to ensure that other that did not know what it was about understood the opening scene. During this week we also added the titles to the opening scene. This was to inform the audience of the important details such as who the main actors were and who was behind the scenes of the opening scene.
The only challenge that we seemed to face was ensuring that the font we chose matched up to the genre of our film. This was difficult because we had to ensure it could be easily read and we had to make sure it fitted with the genre. We managed to overcome this by asking others for their opinion.
15th – 19th February
This week we continued our editing and we also finished the editing. We had to ensure that the film ran smoothly and had the correct transitions when needed throughout the opening scene. Once we did this we had to import music. We found this quite challenging because we had to find music that fitted with the genre. After a long time searching, we managed to find a piece of music which fitted the genre and fitted well with the contents of the opening scene also.

Feedback Response

In order to improve my blog, I will complete the following tasks:

  • A production diary. This will include what was involved throughout the process of creating the opening scene. This will include videos and photos of the set. This will give the viewer a sense of what the set looked like and felt like.
  • Early film edits. I will include explanations of why certain clips were not used. This will give a detailed explanation about how we chose the shots that we used.
  • Final edit. This will show the finish product of the whole process.
  • Evaulation. I will evaluate the whole process. It will include what could have been done differently and what went well during the process.
I am hoping to complete all these tasks by 11th March.

Mr Judge Feedback - Provisional Mark/Level/Grade: Level 4: 16/20

Medal:You have made some excellent progression since your last feedback and have made all the additions. I particularly like the fact you have embedded your initial studio logo idea, you could possibly enhance that post by showing us some drawing designs of that logo in their infancy. Scripts, storyboards are looking excellent. Your group just needs to make sure you finish your actual film as soon as possible, and also start making in roads into how your group will complete their digital evaluations.

Mission: As you make your film you could add 'production diary' entries that talk us through the challenges of making your film, we could also do with some images from the set, even video clips from when you filmed to give us a sense of the whole production process.

Your current t interim grade is level 4: (16/20) As you finish your posts including the evaluation, early film edits, final edit, this should increase.
  • Planning and research evidence will be complete and detailed;
There is excellent research into similar products and a potential target audience;
There is excellent organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props;
There is excellent work on shotlists, layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboarding;
There is an excellent level of care in the presentation of the research and planning

Time management is excellent.

Please provide feedback, in the form of a new post, how and when you hope to achieve the tasks.

Storyboard

Below is the storyboard that our group created. I have included the full script on the storyboard in order to know what shots I should use and where/when. I feel that this storyboard is in depth and our group is able to follow it clearly.

Production Schedule

This is our production schedule. We have decided to have the production schedule electronic because this way there is less chance of us losing the schedule. This means that we are able to stick to the schedule. We are also able to indicate when we finish tasks and if we have gone over our set deadline. We are able to see our set deadlines for different tasks and we can see our over all deadline for the opening scene. It allows us as a group to stay on track with the project.

Our set deadlines are as followed.

Our casting in total should be completed by week 4 which is the 4th to the 8th of January.
Our post production tasks (location choices and role allocation) should be completed by the end of week 1 which is the 14th to the 18th December.
Filming has a deadline of week 5 which is the 11th to the 15th January.
All the editing for the opening scene must be done by the final deadline which is the 29th January (week 7)

Final Script

After each member of the group created their own script for the opening scene. We decided that we were going to use Charlotte's but we were going to incorporate other parts from the other scripts. We did this because it ensures that we were putting all our ideas together in order to create the best script possible. Below is our final script.

FADE IN:

Ext. Castle Grounds – Picturesque setting – Late daytime – evening
Title sequence
Shot shows a close up of hands joined together. The camera zooms out to
reveal the couple – both are 17 and male and seem happy and in love.
The pair exchange words inaudible to the audience.

FADE OUT: Screen shows a rewind to 6 months earlier

Ext. Establishing shot – Sixth Form Building – Day
FADE IN: Title appears over shot.

Int. Sixth Form Canteen – Corner table – Day

Matt POV: Phone screen fills shot displaying conversation, the recipient goes by the name ‘Sam’ – relationship visible through the exchange using hearts and x’s.

The phone is taken from the hands holding it and taken off screen.

Camera cuts to a table of a group of friends – all around the age of 17/18 and male, Matt seated at edge of the table and reaches for his phone which is held out of reach by one of the friends.

FRIEND #1  (mockingly, looking down toward the phone screen) Who’s Sam?
Matt slightly uncomfortable – awkwardly laughs.
Laughter proceeds from all. The phone is passed to another
                  character.
FRIEND #2  (mockingly reads from phone screen) I’ll see you soon I promise
                  (Laughter)
FRIEND #1  (mockingly reads) I love you
                  (laughter)

Matt laughs along as friends continue to laugh and nudge him. Although clearly uncomfortable is smiling and playing along.

FRIEND #1  Got yourself a girlfriend then?
FRIEND #2  Kept that one quiet (winks)

Matt keeps his head hung low whilst laughing and grabs his phone as the rest of the boys continue to laugh.

MATT   (jokingly) it’s nothing

                  Pause as laughter dies down

MATT  So, (pauses) Did you se the game last night?
FRIEND #1  (laughing) Who would’ve thought that Matt would ever actually get a girlfriend

                  Friends mock gasps

MATT  Yeah yeah (looks back down at phone and sighs)
The friends drift into separate conversations as the mocking dies down.
The camera remains emphasising the Matt’s uneasiness.
             Moments pass.

MATT  (standing) I’ve got to go back to lesson, look I’ll see you later

Matt leaves the table, the camera cuts to show all members of the table paying no attention to him.

FRIEND #1  (shouting) Going back to your lover are we?

Friends laugh. The protagonist hears this and noticeably sighs. As he walks away the camera pans to reverse tracking. Once a considerable distance from the table, the sound of a text is heard. Matt lifts his phone to read the message and a small smile appears in his face.

Third Version of Script

The script below is the script that I produced.

Fade in
Ext. Castle Grounds in Tamworth during the day
Close up of the character holding hands. Zoom out to show that the couple are the same sex (both male). Both characters are teenagers (17/18). One character should be more masculine to challenge stereotypical codes and conventions. The other character should fit the stereotype.

Mattie (v.o) In today’s society, you would think that this would be acceptable. We still get looks in the street but it doesn’t faze us, well, not anymore anyway.

Rewind to 1 year ago which is the beginning of their relationship/story.
Establishing shot of Landau Forte Sixth Form accompanied by the title sequence with music

Cut to a long shot of Mattie at a table with his group of friends. Mattie appears to be texting someone with the name ‘Sam’.

Mattie POV looking at the messages. Clearly flirty messages.

The phone is snatched out of Mattie’s hands.

Friend 1   (reading text messages in a mocking tone) Aw you’re so cute, we really need to meet soon
Group oo’s

Friend 2  (takes phone out of friend 1’s hand) So who’s Sam then ey? You’re new girlfriend?
Mattie snatches phone from friend 2

Mattie She is just a friend guys (looks back down at phone)

Friend 2   Yeah okay we believe you  (looks at friend 1 and smirks)
Group mocks by doing kisses in the air

Mattie Oh shut up guys (laughs awkwardly) Look I’m going back to lesson now. I’ll see you later
Mattie stands and begins to walk away from the table

Friend 1   (shouting) Don’t have to much fun
Group laughs. Mattie smiles and shakes head

The sound of a received text is heard. Mattie’s POV view to view the message.
Cut to medium close up of Mattie smiling

Mattie then walks off.

Second Version of Script

This is the script that another member of the group, Charlotte, created.

FADE IN:

Ext. Castle Grounds – Picturesque setting – Late daytime – evening

Shot shows a close up of hands joined together. The camera zooms out to reveal the couple – both are 17 and male and seem happy and in love. The pair exchange words inaudible to the audience

FADE OUT: Screen shows a rewind to 6 months earlier

Ext. Establishing shot – Sixth Form Building – Day
FADE IN: Title appears over shot.

Int. Sixth Form Canteen – Corner table – Day

Protagonist POV: Phone screen fills shot displaying conversation, the recipient goes by the name ‘Sam’ – relationship visible through the exchange using hearts and x’s.

The phone is taken from the hands holding it and taken off screen.

Camera cuts to a table of a group of friends – all around the age of 17/18 and male, protagonist seated at edge of the table and reaches for his phone which is held out of reach by one of the friends.

FRIEND #1  (mockingly, looking down toward the phone screen) Who’s Sam?

Protagonist visibly uncomfortable – shifts in seat.

Laughter proceeds from all. The phone is passed to another character.

FRIEND #2  (mockingly reads from phone screen) I’ll see you soon I promise
                     (Laughter)

FRIEND #1  (mockingly reads) I love you
                     (laughter)

Protagonist remains silent as friends await response and continue to laugh and nudge him. Although clearly uncomfortable is smiling and playing along.

FRIEND #1  Got yourself a girlfriend then?
FRIEND #2  Kept that one quiet

Protagonist keeps his head hung low and seems sheepish as the rest of the boys continue to laugh.

PROTAGONIST  (quietly) it’s nothing

PROTAGONIST  Can I have my phone back?

FRIEND #1  (laughing) Missing Sam already

PROTAGONIST (mumbles low and sighing) yeah

Nobody pays any attention to him but the phone is handed back. The friends drift into separate conversations as the mocking dies down.

The camera remains emphasising the protagonists’ discomfort.

Moments pass.

PROTAGONIST  (sense of urgency) I’ve got to go back to lesson, look I’ll see you later

Protagonist stands and leaves the table, the camera cuts to show all members of the table paying no attention to him. The protagonist notices and noticeably sighs. As he walks away the camera pans backwards following him. Once a considerable distance from the table, the sound of a text is heard. The protagonist lifts his phone to read the message and a small smile appears in his face.

PROTAGONIST  (V/O) and this is my life.
