Locations

Below are some photos of the areas in the Castle Grounds where we decided to film our opening scene. This is so you are able to get an insight to the location instead of just watching the opening scene.

We felt that this area of the Castle Grounds was a good location due to the flowers. The colours on the flowers were bright and colourful which could show that this opening scene is a romantic comedy. Also, flowers are stereotypically girly therefore it could represent that the two males in the opening scene are quite feminine.

The next photos shows the bench that the two males sat on during the opening scene. We decided on this area because it look romantic and calm. This represents that they are not at peace even after events which would be seen during the film.

The next photo is a photo of the short clip that was filmed when the one character claimed that he 'did not like geese". This location was private which we thought has a nice touch to the opening scene because it showed that the couple was on their own 'journey'.

The next photos showed the end shot of the couple when they are in the Castle Grounds. We chose this area because we felt that it had a romantic feel with the way the area was framed. It showed the audience that love was present between the two characters.

Below is a video of part of the Castle Grounds which we decided to film in.

Production Diary

Due to personal problems with my actors, they were unable to make the dates that we needed them to in order to stick to the production Schedule. We managed to get the scenes we needed within a short amount of time after the deadline.

Date
Actions
4th – 8th January
During this week, as a group, we allocated the roles within our group. This meant that we had to decide our strengths and weaknesses so we could give out roles. It was agreed that I would be the editor. Also during this week, we discussed within the group who we could get to act within the film. This meant we had to look at what they would do during filming and we also had to ask people what they would be comfortable with. Towards the end of the week, we found our four main characters that were comfortable and willing to be in the film.
The main challenge that we faced was as a group, we found it difficult to find actors that were willing to play a homosexual character. This was due to the actor not feeling comfortable. As a group, we decided to extend our search by asking our definite characters if they knew anyone that would be able to act within the film and be comfortable. This is how we resolved the problem.
11th – 15th January
During this week, we focused on our locations. Although we decided where we were going to film, we needed specific areas within these locations. We decided that the best way to figure out the best locations would be to visit the locations. Therefore this is what we did. We went to the sixth forms canteen and decided that the back table would be the best area to film because it was out the way from the busiest parts of the canteen. This meant we would not have had a much background noise. We also visited the castle grounds in order to find the best locations. We walked around the areas and decided that different areas would be good to film but in different ways.
One challenge we faced when picking the areas was that we had to try and picture what area would be best for our opening scene. We had to carefully think about which parts of the canteen and what parts of the castle grounds would look best. We decided to go with most areas we chose due to being under a short time frame and also we decided that the areas were good because they were realistic.
18th – 22nd

January
During this week, as a group we decided the costumes and props that were going to be used. This meant going through our main characters and deciding who was going to wear what costume. We decided that for the canteen scene, they were all going to wear suits. This is because the other students that were in the background were also wearing suits therefore it would have looked odd if the characters were wearing different clothes. Also, we decided that our main character, Matt, was not going to wear a tie. This is because it showed that Matt was different to the others since they were wearing a tie and he wasn’t. It was representation for the fact he is gay. For the Castle grounds scene we decided to have the characters dressed in everyday clothes which included a scarf. We decided to use a scarf because it was used to show that the weather is icy cold which could represent that the opening scene was set in winter.
A challenge that we faced was that it was difficult to ensure that all the actors had the correct outfits when we began filming. This is because if the costume wasn’t correct then this could have affected our opening scene and its representations

During this week, we also created our studio logo on After Effects. We decided touse After Effects because this software has different effects which allowed us to make a good studio logo.
The challenge we faced with this was that no one on the group knew how to use the software therefore we were all learning. In order to overcome this problem, we decided to create different studio logos in order to learn how to use the software before making our own studio logo. It meant that the trial gave us the correct knowledge on how to use the software.
25th – 29th
January
During this week, we filmed the canteen scene. We had 4 actors participating in this scene. This included our main actor (Matthew), friend #1 (Tom) and friend #2 (Chris) and we also had a background actor. We gave the actors the script before we began filming so they were aware of the lines that they had and the order in which they had to speak. Once the actors felt comfortable with what they had to act, we were able to begin filming. We decided to film several different angles of the same scene. This meant that once we started editing, we were able to see the best angles for each part of dialogue.
During the filming, we had to overcome and deal with challenges. One of the challenges that we had to face was the background noise. This was due to the other pupils going on their break. Since we were filming in the canteen, this was a popular place for the pupils when on their break. This meant that when we were filming, the background noise became a issue because we were unable to hear the actors speak. In order to overcome this problem, we filmed the scene in between breaks. This gave us enough time to film the angles we needed to. Another problem that we faced was the lighting. Due to the canteen having natural light from the windows. This meant that the lighting kept changing due to the natural weather conditions. This became a problem because it caused some of the clips to look different to others that we filmed.
We also filmed the establishing shot and the only challenge that we found with this was high school students walking in front of the camera which meant we were not able to get the best shot. To resolve this, we filmed for a longer period of time so that when it came down to editing, we were able to see what parts we could use.
1st – 5th February
During this week, we filmed at the Castle Grounds. This would have been done the week before but unfortunately the weather prevented us from filming. By being able to finish all the filming, this meant that we were able to begin editing. By being able to start editing this meant that we were able to ensure that our opening scene was created quickly due to already working past our deadline. Since we already knew how to use the Premier, this meant we didn’t have to learn anything knew which made the editing process begin quickly.
The only challenge that we faced during this was to when we were filmed. As we were half way through filming, the weather looks and felt as if it was going to rain quite heavily. This meant we had to film quickly in order to avoid the weather. This is how we resolved the issue.
8th – 12th February
During this film we continued to edit our film. This meant ensuring that the opening scene was in the correct order. We did this by watching the opening scene continuously to ensure that it made sense. We also got someone that was unfamiliar with our opening scene to watch it to ensure that other that did not know what it was about understood the opening scene. During this week we also added the titles to the opening scene. This was to inform the audience of the important details such as who the main actors were and who was behind the scenes of the opening scene.
The only challenge that we seemed to face was ensuring that the font we chose matched up to the genre of our film. This was difficult because we had to ensure it could be easily read and we had to make sure it fitted with the genre. We managed to overcome this by asking others for their opinion.
15th – 19th February
This week we continued our editing and we also finished the editing. We had to ensure that the film ran smoothly and had the correct transitions when needed throughout the opening scene. Once we did this we had to import music. We found this quite challenging because we had to find music that fitted with the genre. After a long time searching, we managed to find a piece of music which fitted the genre and fitted well with the contents of the opening scene also.

Feedback Response

In order to improve my blog, I will complete the following tasks:

  • A production diary. This will include what was involved throughout the process of creating the opening scene. This will include videos and photos of the set. This will give the viewer a sense of what the set looked like and felt like.
  • Early film edits. I will include explanations of why certain clips were not used. This will give a detailed explanation about how we chose the shots that we used.
  • Final edit. This will show the finish product of the whole process.
  • Evaulation. I will evaluate the whole process. It will include what could have been done differently and what went well during the process.
I am hoping to complete all these tasks by 11th March.

Mr Judge Feedback - Provisional Mark/Level/Grade: Level 4: 16/20

Medal:You have made some excellent progression since your last feedback and have made all the additions. I particularly like the fact you have embedded your initial studio logo idea, you could possibly enhance that post by showing us some drawing designs of that logo in their infancy. Scripts, storyboards are looking excellent. Your group just needs to make sure you finish your actual film as soon as possible, and also start making in roads into how your group will complete their digital evaluations.

Mission: As you make your film you could add 'production diary' entries that talk us through the challenges of making your film, we could also do with some images from the set, even video clips from when you filmed to give us a sense of the whole production process.

Your current t interim grade is level 4: (16/20) As you finish your posts including the evaluation, early film edits, final edit, this should increase.
  • Planning and research evidence will be complete and detailed;
There is excellent research into similar products and a potential target audience;
There is excellent organisation of actors, locations, costumes or props;
There is excellent work on shotlists, layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboarding;
There is an excellent level of care in the presentation of the research and planning

Time management is excellent.

Please provide feedback, in the form of a new post, how and when you hope to achieve the tasks.

Storyboard

Below is the storyboard that our group created. I have included the full script on the storyboard in order to know what shots I should use and where/when. I feel that this storyboard is in depth and our group is able to follow it clearly.
